I was thinking about Yoshi's Island, and how every time they try to make a sequel to the game it ends up failing. So I was just thinking a lot about what other things they could do for another Yoshi game. And then I thought...
Why doesn't Yoshi have any dinosaur friends?
So I started drawing some dinosaurs, Yoshi style! The tough thing about Yoshi, is that even though he's a dinosaur, he doesn't give off a prehistoric vibe. So when designing other dinosaur friends it's difficult to achieve the Yoshi spirit without treading into prehistoric territory. Part of the reason for this is because Yoshi was purely designed around gameplay, these little guys that I drew look to have some gameplay in them, but more like in the sense of a power-up, almost like the animal buddies from the DKC series. Or a gameplay alternative to transformations.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to give Yoshi some dinosaur friends either. But I really felt like showing them to the Nintendo fans out there. Suggest some ideas for names if you want too.
This actually brings back memories for me. At one point, I envisioned a sequel I'd like to see to Super Mario World, with similar platforming gameplay, but the Yoshis (except for the green one, who would be the same) replaced by certain other iconic dinosaur species. As I recall, Yellow would be a triceratops because of its stomping ability (I never thought of a sauropod even though it's the most iconic dinosaur image for many, as it just seemed too big to be practical), Blue would naturally be a pterydactyl since it could fly (although it isn't really a dinosaur, but I didn't know that as a kid), and Red was, as I recall, a T-Rex, perhaps because it could breathe fire and thus reminded me of Radical Rex, a Sonic ripoff game around back then. I may even have drawn a picture of the idea at some point, but that was close to two decades ago, and I'm sure I don't have it now.
Nice. Yeah, I probably imagined more dinosaurs in further Mario sequels after SMW as well, as I'm sure a lot of kids did. I mean, that game actually made a point of Yoshi being a dinosaur, he sort of lost that status since then... Yeah, my bronto guy would probably be blue, the triceratops yellow, and the pterydactyl pink (blue would blend in too much with the sky it'd constantly be in, I'd think). I always saw Yoshi in the T-rex spot, even though he's not a T-rex... he still has a similar stature to them, and would take their place, I'd imagine.
I remember a letter to Nintendo Power's editors by a guy who said he thought Yoshi was a struthiomimus. Personally, I don't see it. I'd say he looks like a cross between a dromeosaur (raptor) and a hadrosaur (duckbill); plus maybe with a bit of frog or chameleon in him given the tongue.
If you want to get technical, there were what were supposed to be other dinosaurs in Super Mario World. Rex is obviously supposed to be a T-Rex, while Reznor and whatever that big thing thing that shrinks and breathes fire when you jump on them were probably supposed to be protoceratops or something.

Just to show a few.
Y'know if Yoshi needs some dinosaur buds, he can always check out Fossil Fighters
