It's the series 30th anniversary this year. It's nice knowing that its back on top again with Donkey Kong Country Returns, Retro Studios is just fantastic. The series has had traveled quite a bumpy road since its first game, always switching developers or going through extremely long dry periods, but even still, the games have always been top-notch high quality platformers. Let's hope they keep it up.
Yeah I agree, donkey kong has had so many different types of games but it is the Country games that stand out as the best for me. Retro did an amazing job with the franchise (as they also did with their metroid prime series) and I hope that another one is on it's way
Did you notice that if you leave Donkey kong motionless for a while that he starts playing on a DS. Maybe thats hinting at the next installment as the 3DS is going to sell tons.
I feel Rare has gone a bit downhill ever since crossing over to microsoft which is a shame as they were such a major nintendo company churning out greats such as 'Goldeneye 007' and the 'Banjo Kazooie' series, as well as making the dk series into something great. Such as shame that Nintendo lost one of their greatest companies, but that being said, Rare did do quite a good job with Kinect Sports, embarrassing most of the other launch day efforts.
Btw, if you look around the Donkey Kong Country returns menu (I think you have to look at extras) you see the Rare 'R' logo made up by seaweed - a little homage by Retro. There are quite a lot of 'easter eggs' in this game like that one
